About

I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of German and Romance Languages and Literatures at Johns Hopkins University.  I hold a BA in Fine Art, with a minor in Religious Studies, from Connecticut College.

My areas of interest are as varied as my academic background, and tend to be comparative in nature.  They include medieval and early modern Italian literature, medieval Islamic literature and philosophy, pilgrimage and travel narrative, and the cultural, literary and intellectual intersections between premodern Europe and the Islamic world.

My dissertation research will examine the possible connections between the Commedia of Dante and an earlier Islamic work, the Kitab al-Mi'raj.  In my comparative study of the two works, I will consider the apocalyptic tradition that has informed their creation, touching upon such elements as the architecture of the afterlife, the presence of a guiding figure, and the use of apophatic discourse.
