The purpose of this study was to demonstrate a RadLex-driven Web Bot with which image acquisition metadata can be extracted from the Materials and Methods sections of online peer-reviewed content. EVALUATION The data-mining algorithm created to power the Web Bot works in 3 stages: (1) It detects paragraphs within peer-reviewed content that contain imaging acquisition information; (2) Imaging modalities used in the study are then identified; and (3) Elements pertaining to specific imaging modalities are extracted, utilizing a library of terms (from RadLex) associated with that modality. Results are then indexed and stored in a database from which an application can access the information using Web services. We will demonstrate utilization of image acquisition metadata from this Web Bot in a medical imaging search engine. DISCUSSION The ability to extract i...
Automated Reporting Solution for Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) Bone Densitometry Scanners

ABSTRACT Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is an established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). The generation of DEXA reports remains a very time consuming process despite availability of various report generating solutions from the DEXA scanner manufacturers. This is largely due to tabular report format, which does not translate properly when sent to text-only, ASCII-based radiology information systems (RIS). As a result, the radiologist dictates from a printout generated by the technologist, a labor intensive process that is vulnerable to error in the transcription process. The pu...

An enterprise-wide search engine that indexes HL7 messages to provide search capabilities for local intraenterprise patient information; 2. Modification of search results based on real-time analysis of user queries prior to execution of search; and 3. Use of radiology ontologies to index radiology reports and extract semantic meaning CONTENT ORGANIZATION Review of need for a patient-centric search engine that enables users to query patient information. Overview of capabilities, including radiology-specific results, ontology-based modification of search results based on user queries, query-related special content delivery, and query expansion utilizing related terms in various ontologies and RadLex to broaden specific searches. Limitations Future directions and summary SUMMARY This exhibit demonstrates the use and applications of an enterprise-wide semantic search engine to index radiology reports. The Yottalook Local search engine allows radiologists to searc...

We will also discuss the underlying MRSS technology and other applications such as distribution of course/conference video. CONTENT ORGANIZATION Discuss the Multimedia RSS (MRSS) and its simiarities and differences to a standard RSS feed. Demonstrate how to use MRSS to visualize radiology image search results in an immersive 3D environment using freely accessible software Show how to subscribe to MRSS feeds using a variety of online and downloadable RSS readers Demonstrate other applications of MRSS including distribution of radiology resident conference video. SUMMARY Multimedia RSS (MRSS) can be used to display radiology image search results from the web in a highly optimized and immersive 3D environment which permits the user to zoom, pan, and "fly-though" their search results. We will discuss similarities and differen...
Incorporating the RadLex Lexicon in a Radiology-centric Semantic Web Search Engine
PURPOSE Current Web search engines are limited by their ability to provide radiology-specific inf... more PURPOSE Current Web search engines are limited by their ability to provide radiology-specific information at the time of clinical interpretation. One of the reasons for failure is the extreme variability in terms used to describe clinical information and a lack of semantic understanding within search engines. This presentation describes a novel approach to use RadLex-driven controlled vocabulary to develop semantic query analysis and result delivery. METHOD AND MATERIALS We used the Google custom search engine API as the search back end and developed natural query processing and semantic query analysis engines to analyze user queries to explode or filter user search results. Controlled vocabulary was extracted from RadLex lexicon, and semantic ontology was created by describing relationships between terminologies. User queries collected from January to March 2007 were also mapped to controlled vocabulary index. RESULTS Only 1,912 terminologies from RadLex could be extracted for inco...
